A mail survey to estimate the fishery dynamics of southern Florida’s bonefish charter fleet

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Bonefish, Albula vulpes (L.), support an economically important recreational fishery in southern Florida, USA that has received little scientific study and has never been adequately assessed. A mail survey of 322 captains that comprise the southern Florida bonefish charter fleet was conducted to acquire a baseline understanding of the primary fishery statistics. The response rate was 59% and a follow-up telephone survey of nonrespondents indicated no non-response bias. Experience in the fishery ranged from 3 to 61 years. The annual fishing effort was 30 875 boat days. The majority of the fleet fishing effort occurred in the northern Florida Keys and is presumed to reflect bonefish abundance. The instantaneous mortality rate of released fish was 0.11 year. The majority of the respondents indicated that the bonefish stock had declined over the past decade.

Quantitative assessment of a data-limited recreational bonefish fishery using a time-series of fishing guides reports

Recreational fisheries can be prone to severe declines, yet these fisheries, particularly catch-and-release, are often data-limited, constraining our ability to conduct stock assessments. A combination of catch and effort indices derived from fisheries-dependent data (FDD) gathered from fishing logbooks could be a powerful approach to inform these data gaps. This study demonstrates the utility ...

Effects of recreational angling on the post-release behavior and predation of bonefish (Albula vulpes): The role of equilibrium status at the time of release

Even though the recreational fishery for bonefish (Albula spp) is predominantly catch-and-release, the effects of angling on individual behavior and survival are poorly understood. We used visual tracking to measure the short-term post-release behavior and survival of bonefish (Albula vulpes) in Eleuthera, The Bahamas, to determine if any specific aspects of the angling event were linked to pos...

Presenting a Solution for Sustainable Control of Natural Gas Usage in the Fuel Fleet of Urban Taxis With a System Dynamics Strategy

Despite the presence of 90% of double-fuel taxis (gasoline + CNG) in the urban taxi fleet, fuel consumption choices are more dependent on pricing policies and factors such as gasoline subsidies and quotas, and with the slightest change in fuel rates and quotas, use natural gas fuel. . Impact and challenge fuel management in the public transport fleet. The main purpose of this is to identify way...

Fleet behavior is responsive to a large-scale environmental disturbance: Hypoxia effects on the spatial dynamics of the northern Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery

The northwestern Gulf of Mexico shelf experiences one of the largest seasonal hypoxic zones in the western hemisphere. Hypoxia (dissolved oxygen, DO ≤ 2.0 mg·L-1) is most severe from May to August during the height of the Gulf shrimp fishery, but its effects on the fishery are not well known. Prior studies indicate that hypoxia alters the spatial dynamics of shrimp and other species through hab...

Reliability of a model based on a short fishery statistics survey: application to the Northeast Atlantic monkfish fishery

A model based on a short fishery statistics survey was applied to estimate catch and catch per unit effort (cpue) of the Galician monkfish (Lophius spp.) trawl fleet during 1998. In all, 35 interviews were conducted with fisheries personnel in ICES Divisions IXa, VIIIc, VIIId, and VIIIe (coastal offshore fishing grounds) and 44 in VIIb, VIIc, VIIj, and VIIk (Grand Sole fishing ground). Reliabil...
